EUobserver: Lukashenka may have planned to kill his critics

According to Deutsche Welle, the audio recording was handed over to the EUobserver by the Belarusian opposition activist and former employee of the anti-terrorist special unit Almaz Igor Makar

Alexander Lukashenko may have been planning to kill his critics who left the republic, EUobserver reported on 4 January. According to journalists, a 24-minute recording with a fragment of a conversation about the preparation of the assassination attempts was made in April 2012. The voices on the recording may have belonged to Vadim Zaitsev (at that time – the head of the KGB of Belarus) and representatives of the Alfa special forces unit.

According to Deutsche Welle, the audio recording was given to the EUobserver by the Belarusian opposition activist and former employee of the anti-terrorist special unit Almaz Igor Makar. Experts have not yet been able to finally confirm the authenticity of the audio recording..

The alleged victims of the conspirators were supposed to be the former head of pre-trial detention center No. 1 in Minsk Oleg Alkaev, the former commander of the special forces brigade Vladimir Borodach and the former head of the anti-corruption department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus Vyacheslav Dudkin. They may have been in Germany at the time..

On the recording of the conversation, one of the participants, presumably Zaitsev, can be heard reporting that more than one and a half million US dollars have been transferred to a special account for such operations on the personal order of Lukashenka. The same voice says: The head of state wants to see the result.

From the audio recording it follows that the method of eliminating the journalist Pavel Sheremet, who was then living in Moscow, was also discussed. EUobserver provides photographs of a document received from Makar with Sheremet’s contact details and information about his movements in Moscow.
